Family escapes death after car crashes into houses in Jigawa
A woman and her children narrowly escaped death when a vehicle veered off the road and crashed into their house, causing significant damage in Jigawa State. The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Dutse, the state capital, leaving four houses completely destroyed by fire.
Eyewitnesses reported that the car crashed into a residential building, causing the wall to collapse and driving directly into the living room where the woman and her children were asleep. Fortunately, they managed to escape without injury.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Jigawa State, DSP Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the incident, describing it as a harrowing event that took place early in the morning.
DSP Adam confirmed, “A woman and her children escaped death, but four houses were burned to the ground during the incident.”
The crash occurred at approximately 00:30 hours on Elpies Street in the Mobile Quarters area of Dutse.
According to the PPRO, the vehicle was being driven by Muhammad Galadima, 32, and Abdullahi Abubakar Sadiq, 41, both of the same address. It is suspected that they were under the influence of alcohol when the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla with registration number NSR 120 BC, lost control. The car and the house it crashed into were engulfed in flames, which spread to three neighbouring properties.
“The prompt response of the police and firefighters ensured that no lives were lost in the incident,” DSP Adam added.
On receiving the report, a police team quickly arrived at the scene and, along with firefighters and community members, managed to put out the fire.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Galadima, the owner of the vehicle, had given the car keys to Sadiq, despite knowing that Sadiq was not skilled in driving. Both suspects and the vehicle have been taken into custody for further investigation.
“The suspects will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted once the investigation is complete,” DSP Adam stated.
“We urge all drivers to act responsibly and exercise caution, especially during the festive season.”
The Jigawa Police Command has appealed to residents to report any suspicious activities or reckless driving to the nearest police station. The command also praised the quick response of the firefighters and community members, whose actions prevented further loss of life and property.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of residents living near roadsides in Dutse, particularly in light of the risks posed by reckless driving.
