Excitement as train delivers gas pipes for $2.8bn AKK project

The $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project received a major boost at the weekend in the delivery of 96 pipes from Warri, Delta State to Itakpe, Kogi State in North-Central.

The AKK pipeline is a 614km-long natural gas pipeline being developed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). It is used to transport natural gas from southern Nigeria to central Nigeria.

The $2.8billion pipeline project represents phase one of the 1,300km-long Trans-Nigerian Gas Pipeline (TNGP) project, which is being developed as part of Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan to utilize the federal government’s surplus gas resources for power generation as well as for consumption by domestic customers.

The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, who expressed excitement, wrote via his twitter handle, stated that, “We congratulate our team on the arrival at 10.25pm 8.4.2021 of AKK gas project line pipes by rail from Warri to Itakpe. Less cost, faster delivery time, safer, protecting our roads and more…..The infrastructure revolution is paying up.”

NNPC stated that the 96 pipes transported at once is equivalent to 32 trailers if the haulage was transported by road.
