Ex-senate minority leader, Mwadkwon, condemns Plateau killings

Sen. Simon Mwadkwon, former Senate Minority Leader, has urged security agencies to apprehend those behind the Christmas eve killings in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau.

Mwadkwon, who made the call at a news conference on Wednesday in Jos, urged security agencies to adopt proactive measures toward securing lives and property.

Recall that gunmen attacked 30 communities, killed 200 persons, and destroyed 1,300 houses and other properties in Mangu, Bokkos and Barkin Ladi LGAs.

According to Mwadkwon, the killings had continued undoubtedly due to the inability of the security agencies to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

“They have not been dealt with. They have not been punished according to the laws of Nigeria and that is why these attacks have not stopped.

“With the coming of this government in the state, we thought that the security situation will be different because of the zeal and commitment shown.

“When communities in Mangu were attacked, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) personally visited; we saw the proactive steps by the security agencies and some of  these criminals were neutralised.

“These perpetrators are not ghosts; they are human beings and can be arrested and prosecuted,” he added.

Mwadkwon said that it was sad that people were killed during the Christmas season, a time of peace and celebration.

He insisted that the attacks were aimed at distracting Gov. Caleb Mutfwang from delivering on the dividends of democracy to the people.

He maintained that the governor had hit the ground running and immediately he took over the mantle of leadership as governor, by initiating various projects.

“I see it as an attempt to deter the governor from the good works he has started, but he will not be deterred even though he is saddened by the killings,’’ Mwadkwon said.

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Wednesday visited the affected victims in Bokkos and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Shettima was accompanied on the visit by Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), among others.
