Eradicate all bandits in N’West — Defence Minister urges troops
In a decisive push against the escalating banditry crisis in the North-West, Defence Minister Dr. Muhammad Bello Matawalle has urged the Nigerian Army’s 8th Division to intensify efforts in eradicating bandits and terrorists from the region.
During his visit to the division’s headquarters in Sokoto State on Tuesday, Matawalle emphasised the critical need to “flush out” these criminal elements, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s overarching strategy to restore peace and security. His visit underscores a renewed commitment from the government to support military operations and strengthen the fight against the persistent threat of banditry and terrorism plaguing the North-West.
Accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff and senior military officials, Dr. Matawalle engaged directly with the troops of the joint task force, Operation Hadarin Daji.
This action comes after the federal government’s directive last Friday, which called on the Chief of Defence Staff to promptly travel to Sokoto and oversee the military’s operations aimed at ending the banditry that has plagued communities throughout the North-West.
The operation is a cornerstone of the Nigerian government’s strategy to combat banditry and terrorism in the North-West. During his visit, Matawalle emphasised the need for intensified efforts, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s firm commitment to restoring peace and security in the troubled region.
“The security of our nation remains a paramount concern,” Matawalle declared. “The President has made it unequivocally clear that the bandits and terrorists threatening our peace must be eradicated.”
“Our military has the full backing of the government, and we will do whatever it takes to restore peace and stability to this region,” he added.
The Defence Minister praised the troops for their dedication and resilience amid the challenging security landscape. His remarks underscored the government’s full support for Operation Hadarin Daji, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the military leadership and the government to ensure the operation’s success.
“The Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs are committed to providing all necessary resources and strategic guidance,” Matawalle stated. “We anticipate nothing less than total success in this mission.”
The visit also included a comprehensive review of the operational strategies in place. Matawalle engaged with military leaders to discuss enhancements aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the ongoing efforts against banditry and terrorism. He reiterated that the government is steadfast in its support, affirming President Tinubu’s confidence in the troops’ capabilities.
In addition to reviewing military operations, Dr. Matawalle visited the 8 Div Medical Facilities and Hospital located within Giginya Barracks. This visit was significant in acknowledging the essential role of medical support in maintaining troop morale and operational effectiveness. Matawalle pledged government support to improve the facility’s capabilities and boost the morale of patients.
The Defence Minister’s visit is seen as a critical step in bolstering the morale of the troops and reinforcing the government’s commitment to the fight against banditry and terrorism in the North-West. By providing direct support and reassurances, the government aims to strengthen the operational capabilities of the military and ensure the successful execution of Operation Hadarin Daji.
