Enugu endorses FG’s plan to relocate Correctional Facility

The Enugu State Government has reiterated its support for the Federal Government’s initiative to relocate the Correctional Centre from Enugu Government Reserved Area (GRA) to a new location.

Governor Peter Mbah affirmed this commitment while hosting members of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions at the Government House, Enugu, on Wednesday.

Mbah informed the delegation, led by Committee Chairman Mr Chinedu Ogah, that his administration had long championed the relocation of the facility, which was originally constructed in 1915, to a more appropriate site.

He commended the Federal Government for taking this step, stating, “This is something we have persistently advocated for.”

“Our administration has already completed the survey of the proposed site, and we are prepared to take you there,” Mbah added.

The governor also urged for the digitalisation of the justice system to help reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities.

“This state has been actively pursuing a comprehensive reform of the justice system. We have fully digitalised court processes to ensure justice is delivered swiftly.

“The correctional centre is largely occupied by inmates who are still awaiting trial,” the governor noted.

In response, Ogah praised Mbah’s efforts in strengthening security across the state.

“I have observed that people now move around freely at any time of the day without fear,” he remarked.

He also commended the government’s investment in security technology, as well as the efforts of correctional officers and other security agencies in preventing jailbreaks in Enugu State.

Ogah further expressed appreciation for the governor’s dedication to providing a new location for the correctional facility
