In recent years, the issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) has gained significant attention worldwide. It is a problem that knows no boundaries and can affect anyone, including our schools. To combat this distressing issue and foster safe learning environments, it is essential to empower school counselors with the knowledge and skills to recognise, report, respond to, and refer to Gender-Based Violence cases.
GBV encompasses various forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse. These acts are perpetrated against individuals based on socially ascribed differences.
In schools, it can manifest in different ways, making it crucial to identify signs of GBV promptly.
Observable indicators may include changes in behaviour, unexplained injuries, fear, and social isolation.
Reporting is the initial crucial step in addressing GBV within a school environment, it is essential to engage the victim with sensitivity and a survivor-centered approach in response to GBV
Empowering school counselors with this knowledge and training is a critical step toward creating safer school environments. By remaining vigilant, empathetic, and responsive, we can ensure that students and staff are protected from GBV, and our schools become a place of safety, support, and learning for all.
It is a collective responsibility, and by taking these measures, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by GBV.
