The Emir of Gusau in Zamfara, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello, has lauded the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for spearheading an awareness and sensitisation camping on ways to avert flood in the state.
The agency sensitised the public on waste management and flood preparedness.
The two-day event is titled: “Sensitisation and Public Awareness Campaign on Proper Waste Management and Flood Preparedness.”
Receiving NEMA’s delegation who paid him a homage in his palace in Gusau on Thursday, Bello appreciated the agency for its timely intervention in bringing awareness campaign to grassroots.
“We appreciate your visit, we are happy with the recognition we always receive from NEMA.
“We are ever ready to support you by mobilising our people especially at the grassroots level so that you can reach them easily,” he said.
Earlier, the Head of Operations, NEMA, Sokoto office, Aliyu Shehu-Kafindangi, who led the delegation, told the emir that they were in his palace to seek royal blessings.
He added that the visit was part of the agency’s awareness and sensitisation workshop on waste management and flood preparedness.
Shehu-Kafindangi said the two-day sensitisation programme was meant to educate the general public on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on waterways and gutters.
“We have visited public places including Gusau central market and major public places, where we shared pamphlets and posters to residents of Gusau for easy dissemination of messages on waste management and flood preparedness,” he noted.
Shehu-Kafindangi stressed the need for continues sensitisation of the general public on proactive measures to avert flood.
The head of operations said the state government “is considering relocating communities living in flood-prone areas.”
Participants at the event included; traditional rulers, religious and community leaders and youths groups, among others.
