In a high-profile trial at the High Court in Ikeja, Lagos, the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arraigned former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, along with co-defendant Henry Omeile, on charges of abuse of office fraud amounting to $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion and others
The prosecution spearheaded by the EFCC, presented its inaugural witness, Monday Osazuwa, a Senior Supervisor at the CBN, at the Court, Osazuwa revealed that he has a longstanding professional relationship with Emefiele, dating back to their tenure at Zenith Bank.
He detailed instances where he allegedly acted as a middleman, facilitating the collection and delivery of cash sums, some exceeding $1 million, to Omeile.
Emefiele is specifically charged with abuse of office, accepting gratification, corrupt demand, receiving property fraudulently obtained, and conferring corrupt advantage, among others. Omeile, on the other hand, faces accusations of accepting gifts by agents.
During the proceedings, both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges. Emefiele was granted bail in the sum of N50 million, with two sureties within the court’s jurisdiction and evidence of three years tax payment in Lagos. Omeile was granted bail in the sum of N1million, with two sureties who are blood relations, also providing evidence of three years tax payment.
The trial is set to continue with hearings scheduled for April 29, May 3, 9, and 17, 2024. As the case unfolds, it has garnered significant attention, reflecting the gravity of the allegations against one of Nigeria’s former top financial officials.
