The Chairman of Ido-Osi Local Government Area in Ekiti, Dr. Lawrence Ogunsina, has warned residents of the areas against dumping refuse in the drains as the rainy season begins.
Ogunsina gave the warning in Ido-Ekiti on Thursday while monitoring the impact of the Wednesday evening downpour in some communities.
He warned residents that dump refuse in the drains to desist or be ready to face sanctions from the local government’s environmental officers.
“Let me sound this warning to those of you in the habits of dumping refuse in the drains to desist from such indecent habit or be ready to face the music when you are caught.
“I want all of you to promote good hygienic environment that will be free from contagious disease, such as cholera, measles, Lassa fever, among others.
“The drainage in front of the houses are for easy passage of water and not for dumping of refuse,” he said.
Ogunsina said that his administration was determined to promote good environmental hygiene and avert flooding.
He advised landlords to always provide good toilets and waste bins for their tenants to allow them dispose their refuse properly and avoid open defecation.
