Edo PDP struggling for relevance, on life support — Gov. Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has launched an attack on the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, calling it a “sick” party on life support, struggling to maintain any semblance of relevance.

In a damning statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo likened the PDP to a dilapidated vehicle abandoned after years of reckless leadership, stating that the party had now become a mere shadow of its former self.

“The PDP is like a broken-down car, once driven with impunity and now abandoned,” Okpebholo stated, denouncing the party for its internal divisions and lack of political direction. He further accused the opposition of lashing out at the current administration as a desperate attempt to stay in public discourse.

“Rather than seeking redemption, the PDP continues to engage in aimless wailing against a government that is steadily gaining the trust of the people,” he said.

The Governor took particular aim at the party’s leadership, asserting that the “drowning” PDP was grasping at illusions of political survival, relying on propaganda, misinformation, and baseless accusations to remain visible in the media.

Okpebholo criticised the opposition’s failure to accept the reality of their political demise, calling their latest antics nothing more than “unproductive tantrums.”

“Edo PDP’s leaders are wasting their dwindling political oxygen on fruitless attacks,” he remarked. “This is a party suffering from terminal political irrelevance, a far cry from the once mighty force that governed Edo State.”

In his critique, Okpebholo also pointed out the irony of the opposition’s newfound criticisms of his administration, highlighting the eight years of mismanagement and neglect under the previous PDP-led government.

Okpebholo also recalled how former Governor Godwin Obaseki and other key figures in the PDP were responsible for the party’s downfall.

“The same party that squandered the state’s resources and alienated its own members is now claiming to be the voice of reason.

“Obaseki and his co-travelers ran the party into the ground with arrogance and disregard for loyal members,” he added.

The Governor also highlighted the defection of a prominent PDP lawmaker, Sunday Ojiezele Ikpenomen, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that it was not driven by financial gain but by his recognition of the positive changes being implemented by the current administration.

Continuing his condemnation of the opposition, Okpebholo stated that despite their constant media outbursts, the people of Edo were not fooled. “Edo residents have witnessed firsthand the difference between empty rhetoric and practical governance,” he declared.

“While the PDP’s new leaders waste their energy attacking the government, we are busy delivering real results, such as the construction of the Ramat Park flyover, a project long overdue in the state.”

The Governor reiterated his commitment to restoring Edo’s lost glory, rejecting the culture of deceit and stagnation that the PDP had fostered.
