The Ebonyi State government has announced the arrest of 26 individuals involved in illegal revenue collection and impersonation of state agents.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Transport and Special Projects, Prince Igboke Emeka Collins, during a press briefing in Abakaliki on Sunday.
Igboke credited the successful operation to the leadership of Governor Francis Nwifuru, emphasising the administration’s commitment to enhancing the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
“We are following in the governor’s footsteps to ensure that IGR is performing optimally, especially in our ministry,” he stated.
He recounted the irregularities encountered upon assuming office, noting that the transport sector was plagued by fake agencies and impostors collecting fees on behalf of the state.
“With the governor’s support, we have identified and apprehended these illegal collectors, restoring sanity to the transport system,” he added.
The commissioner assured residents that only legitimate revenue collectors, contracted by the Ebonyi State Internal Revenue Service (EBSIRS), are currently authorised to operate.
“I can confidently say that those collecting revenue are genuine and remit funds as required,” he affirmed.
In a related matter, Igboke addressed concerns regarding the transition of the new General Manager of the Ebonyi State Transport Corporation, Mrs. Nnenna Jennifer Igwe.
He dismissed any allegations of delays or sabotage regarding her assumption of duty, stating that she officially took office after a reconciliation meeting with the former manager.
