Drunk bus driver in court for allegedly causing death of 18-year-old pedestrian

A drunk bus driver, Muyideen Bello,23,  yesterday appeared in an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, for alleged reckless driving and killing an 18-year-old pedestrian.

The police charged Bello, whose address was not provided, with two counts of manslaughter and reckless driving.

The prosecution counsel, Insp Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Jan.1, at about 10.30 p.m. opposite Ecobank, Joju area, along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

Mustapha alleged that the defendant, drove a Mazda bus with registration number EKY 363 XS in a reckless and dangerous manner under the influence of alcohol and killed an 18-year-old pedestrian.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 5 and 6(1) of the Federal Highway Act Cap 135,Laws of Federation,2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Chief Magistrate O.L.Oke admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the sum.

Oke ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

The magistrate adjourned the matter until Feb. 18 for further hearing.
