Driver in court for allegedly causing death of pedestrian

A 50-year-old driver, Ibrahim Elewuro, who allegedly drove in a reckless manner, causing the death of a pedestrian, on Tuesday, appeared in an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

The police charged Elewuro, whose address was not provided with reckless driving and murder.

The prosecutor, Insp Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Dec.13, 2020 at about 5 p.m. in Owode-Ijako area, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Highway.

Mustapha said the defendant drove a ”Homo” trailer with registration number KRD 699 XC in a reckless and dangerous manner and caused the death of Adijat Azeez, aged 32-year- old.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 5 and 6(1) of the Federation Highway Act Cap 135, Laws of Federation, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr O.L Oke, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum.

Oke ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

The case was adjourned until March 17 for further hearing.
