Driver, 34, docked over alleged reckless driving, pole damage

A 34-year-old driver, Onyeka Ikenna, who allegedly drove a vehicle in a reckless and dangerous manner, leading to destruction of an electric pole, was on Friday docked at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

Ikenna, of no fixed address, was arraigned on a three-count charge of reckless driving, driving without valid documents and malicious damage.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ade Adeosun, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Jan. 17, at about 8:00p.m at Valentine Street, Sunshine Community Esepe Road, Ile-Epo, Araromi area of Lagos.

Adeosun said that the defendant drove a T4 Volkswagen Bus, with registration number APP 462 XZ on a highway recklessly, without a driver’s licence.

“The defendant also damaged the electric pole valued at N594, 510 belonging to Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).

“The offences contravened Sections 15, 19 and 36 Road Traffic Laws of Lagos State, 2012,” he said.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts of the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Lazarus Hotepo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with two sureties in like sum.

He said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, be gainfully employed and have evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Hotepo adjourned the case until March 30, for mention.
