Dozens killed at mining site in Niger as insecurity worsens
Suspected terrorists, locally referred to as bandits, have attacked Unguwar Magero village in Gurmana ward of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, killing around 13 people at a local mining site. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the miners as they were working, resulting in numerous fatalities. Unguwar Magero, located near the previously affected Madaka and Magami communities, bandits shot indiscriminately, with some reports suggesting the death toll could be higher than 12.
In a related incident on Tuesday, bandits kidnapped an unspecified number of people in Bassa community, also within Shiroro Local Government Area. These consecutive attacks have heightened fear among residents as the bandits’ violence continues.
Niger State Acting Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba condemned the attacks in Rafi and Shiroro local government areas, calling them “satanic, insensible, atrocious, and callous” in a statement issued by Chief Press Secretary Bologi Ibrahim. The Acting Governor expressed deep sorrow over the barbaric acts and extended condolences to the victims’ families and the community. He prayed for the souls of the deceased, comfort for their loved ones, and a swift recovery for the injured. The Acting Governor reaffirmed the Bago-led administration’s commitment to combating insecurity in the state and encouraged security agencies to remain steadfast, promising full support to help them overcome these challenges.
