Don tasks youth corps members on knowledge sharing

The Director, Centre for Supportive Services for the Deaf (CSSD), University of Ilorin, Prof. Afusat Alabi has advised youth corps members to share the knowledge they gained during their academic sojourn with their host communities.

Alabi gave the counsel on Monday while commissioning a personal Community Development Service (CDS) organised by a Youth Corps Member, Miss Rhoda Kolawole.

Kolawole is currently undergoing her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) primary assignment with the Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara state.

The CSSD Director said that the programme was a call to consciousness training of health workers on sign language skills to enable the workers communicate effectively with physically challenged patients.

He said that the programme would help in promoting cordial relationships between health practitioners and physically impaired persons.

Kolawole, a graduate of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, encouraged members of the public to be health-conscious.

“It is important to monitor the types of food you consume.

“Make sure you consume a lot of fruits and vegetables daily to allow the human body to reach its maximum potential.

“While being conscious of your food consumption, you should also be aware of hazards concerning food and the solutions to such hazards.”

The Corps member advised anyone with runny stool to drink a lot of water during the period and to also add some salt and sugar intermittently.

She said that this would help the body generate the nutrients lost in the stool during the purging episode.

She added that drinking an adequate amount of water daily was a good practice.

On his part, Mr. Julius Isarinade, the Deputy Director for the centre, commended the youth corps member for such innovation.

He urged her to continue with such innovative thinking, stating that such gestures pay off positively eventually.

One of the major highlights of the workshop was free medical check-up for participants at the event.

The check-up included weight, height and blood pressure checks.
