Dominican VC calls for collective action to empower women in science
Vice Chancellor of Dominican University, Prof Jacinta Opara, has called for collective action to empower women in science, particularly in the developing world.
Delivering a keynote speech at the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) event held at the University of Ibadan on September 4, 2024, Prof Opara emphasized the need for a collective response to address the unique challenges faced by women scientists.
According to her, “The role of women in science has never been more critical than it is today, We stand at a pivotal moment in history where our contributions are recognized as essential to solving the world’s most pressing challenges.”
Prof Opara acknowledged the challenges faced by women scientists in the developing world, including limited resources, systemic biases, and societal barriers.
She called for a collective response to address these obstacles and ensure equitable access to scientific education, resources, and opportunities for all women.
“It is our duty indeed, our calling to ensure that these obstacles are not only acknowledged but systematically dismantled, we must work together to create an environment where every woman, irrespective of her background, can pursue her scientific passions without fear of discrimination or exclusion.” She stated.
Prof Opara urged the audience to continue championing the causes of women in science, mentor the next generation, and work collaboratively towards a future where gender equality in science is a reality.
“Let us continue to build networks of support, share our knowledge generously, and inspire one another to push the boundaries of what is possible,” she added.
The event was attended by distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, and ladies and gentlemen from various fields of science.
