Director/Secretary FCT, UBEB advises parents on girl child education

Director/Secretary, Federal Capital Territory, FCT Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB, Dr. Hassan Sule, has advised parents in the territory to send their female children/wards, who are of school age to school.
Dr. Sule gave the advice in Abuja while speaking with journalists on the level of preparation in various schools in FCT as students and pupils are about resuming a new term.
The FCT, UBEB Director/Secretary, who said it is an offence for any parent to refuse children from going to school, also noted that discrimination against girl child education should be highly discouraged as both male and female children have equal right to education.
He however stated that the UBEB in the FCT has been sensitising parents about the importance of girl child education, saying that the level of compliance is now high compared to previous years.
“We want also to advice parents to take girl child education serious, because many parents do not attach importance to it. Both boys and girls have equal right to education and so parents should not discriminate in this regards.
“However, we have been sensitising parents and I want to believe that they are understand us. Poverty used to be their excuse, but with the introduction of Universal Basic Education, that has been taken care of. So no parent has any excuse as regard to that and whoever refused to adhere to the advice, there are penalties for keeping any child of school age at home” he said.
Speaking on the level of preparation of schools in the FCT in compliance to Covid-19 protocols and as prescribed by the Federal Government, Dr. Sule explained that all the FCT schools have enough facilities on ground, saying that students and pupils have been sensitised on how to maintain social distancy, wearing of nose mask, washing of hands among others.
He said, “Before now, we have sensitised our students/pupils on Covid-19 protocols. No student is allow to come to the school without nose mask, maintaining social distancy is compulsory and frequent washing of hands. In all our schools, water and soap have been provided to enable students and pupils wash their hands while in the school. All these measures and facilities have been put in place”
Dr. Sule stated that admission process for those going to another class is ongoing, stressing that admission letters are being typed waiting for endorsement in various schools.
He advised parents to sensitise their children/wards on the need to obey the Covid-19 protocols for their safety teachers and others.
