The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has underscored the importance of digital identity for all citizens, emphasising the benefits of a comprehensive national database during the 6th edition of National Identity Day held in Abuja.

This year’s celebration, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure: Enabling Access to Services,” highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing identity management across the country.

In his address, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, said that effective data collection and economic distribution hinge on proper identification of Nigerians. He stressed that accurate identity management is crucial for a government to fully protect and provide for its citizens.

“If you do not get the identity of the people right, you can’t protect who you don’t know. That is the truth. You can’t provide for those you don’t know, and for you to do that, you must get the identity right,” Dr. Tunji Ojo stated.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo elaborated on the significance of Evidence of Identity (EOI), describing it as the foundation for development. He explained that identity is fundamental to development, stating, “Identity is the credo, it is the genesis. It is the beginning upon which development will be built.”

He highlighted that effective identity management helps avoid reputational damage and differentiates between law-abiding citizens and criminals.

He also pointed out that poor management of identities could impede law enforcement and basic governance functions.

“If we are unable to manage identity, you will find it difficult to segregate the good from the bad. You’ll also struggle to provide basic policing and amenities for the people,” Dr. Tunji Ojo remarked.

The Minister stressed that understanding citizens’ identities is essential to comprehending their needs and aspirations, which is crucial for achieving the country’s full potential.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo emphasised the need for a balance between identity management and data protection, highlighting the importance of safeguarding personal information.

“You cannot manage an identity when you can’t protect the data. The Data Protection Act is fundamental in any democracy in the world. It is the right of the people,” he said, noting that while it is the government’s responsibility to collect and manage identities, it is equally the people’s right to have their data protected.

Also, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, delivered a significant address highlighting the crucial role of digital identity in Nigeria’s development.

Tinubu emphasised that National Identity Day is more than a celebration; it is a recognition of every citizen’s fundamental right to have a unique, verifiable identity. This right, he explained, is essential for ensuring individuals’ protection, sustenance, and recognition as integral members of society.

“This year’s National Identity Day underscores the pivotal role that digital identity plays in our nation’s socioeconomic progress. In today’s digital age, proving one’s identity is not just a matter of convenience; it is a cornerstone of our socioeconomic advancement,” President Tinubu stated.

He highlighted that Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) is fundamental for accessing essential services such as healthcare, education, financial inclusion, and social welfare. Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s development depends on ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their background or location, has access to these services.

He linked this objective directly to his administration’s 8-point agenda, which includes food security, job creation, and poverty eradication.

“By leveraging DPI, we can streamline service delivery, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and ensure that government programs effectively reach those in need,” Tinubu said.

The President referenced several government initiatives reliant on a robust digital identity system, including the student loan scheme, the National Youth Talent Export Programme, and the Renewed Hope City and Estate Housing initiative. He stressed that these programs depend on an effective digital identity system to accurately target and benefit the right recipients.

Tinubu also commended the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and its Director General/CEO, Engineer Abisoye Coker Odusote, for their efforts in advancing the digital identity agenda. He praised their commitment to ensuring the success of critical government programs and initiatives.

Calling for a renewed commitment from all Nigerians to build a strong digital public infrastructure, Tinubu expressed optimism about a future where every citizen is equipped to thrive and contribute to the nation’s growth.

In his closing remarks, he reaffirmed the administration’s vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria, emphasising that digital identity is a key enabler of sustainable development.

“Together, we can create a future where every citizen has the means to thrive and contribute to our nation’s development,” he concluded.

In the same vein, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Population and Identity, Hon. Prince Jimi Odimayo, assured stakeholders of lawmakers’ commitment to developing laws and policies aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national identification system.

This, he said, would enhance good governance and help curb fraudulent activities in the country.

Speaking with journalists at the 6th National Identity Day in Abuja on Monday, Odimayo, who represents the Okitipupa/Irele Federal Constituency of Ondo State, emphasised the importance of a robust national identity system.

He highlighted its relevance in managing a growing population, preventing duplication, and ensuring accurate data management.

“It helps verify citizenship, reducing fraudulent activities and ensuring that only eligible citizens access benefits and services. Accurate population data facilitates effective planning, resource allocation, and policy-making,” Odimayo stated.

The lawmaker further noted that the national identity system enhances security by allowing for the identification of individuals and tracking their movements. It also ensures that eligible citizens receive social services, benefits, and subsidies.

Odimayo stressed that the National Assembly will continue to collaborate with relevant government agencies to formulate policies that support economic growth through efficient financial inclusion, taxation, and entrepreneurship. He also pointed out that a well-implemented national identity system upholds the integrity of electoral processes and enables citizens to exercise their right to vote.

“A robust national identity system is essential for effective governance, economic development, and social cohesion in a growing population,” Odimayo concluded.

He acknowledged the government’s commitment to advancing national identification systems and underscored the critical need for efficient service delivery.
