Delta State Assembly passes bill to regulate domestic staff service providers

The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the Domestic Staff Service Providers Registration Bill, 2024, which mandates the formal registration of individuals and organisations offering domestic staff services within the state.

The bill, sponsored by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Mr Emeka Nwaobi (PDP-Aniocha North), was approved during a plenary session in Asaba, presided over by Speaker Dennis Guwor.

Nwaobi moved a motion for the bill’s third reading and final passage following a detailed review of its provisions at the Committee of the Whole.

The motion, seconded by Mr Spencer Owhofa (APC-Ughelli North I), received unanimous approval from the Assembly following a voice vote conducted by the Speaker.

Commenting on the significance of the bill, Guwor stated that once signed into law, it would ensure that all domestic staff service providers within Delta State are duly registered.

“This legislation will also facilitate the monitoring and regulation of domestic staff service providers while imposing sanctions on those operating unlawfully,” Guwor added.

During Tuesday’s plenary, the Speaker also commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for prioritising security as a key component of his administration’s policies.

Guwor praised the governor’s MORE Agenda, stating that his proactive approach to governance demonstrates an understanding that security is vital for economic growth.

The Speaker also acknowledged the contributions of security agencies in maintaining law and order across the state.

Meanwhile, Owhofa, speaking on behalf of his constituents, expressed appreciation to the governor, the Assembly, and security agencies for addressing the recurring clashes between farmers and herders in his constituency.

According to Owhofa, residents can now go about their daily activities without fear of harassment from herders.
