Death toll from Anambra food distribution stampede rises to 22

The police command in Anambra says the death toll from the stampede that occurred in the state is now 22.

In a statement on Sunday, Tochukwu Ikenga, Anambra police spokesperson, said the command has commenced an investigation into the incident.

The stampede took place on Saturday during a rice distribution event at Amaranta stadium in Ojika, Ihiala LGA. The event was organised by Obijackson Foundation.

Ikenga said those who sustained injuries are receiving medical treatment.

“The commissioner of police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the hospital where the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on 21/12/2024 in Okija, Ihiala local government area, are receiving treatment and regrettably stated that twenty-two people lost their lives,” Ikenga said.

“The CP commiserates with family and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured a quick recovery.

“Meanwhile, the investigation into the unfortunate incident is still ongoing.”

A few hours before the Anambra stampede, another stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, claiming the lives of 10 persons.

Just like the Anambra incident, the Abuja event was organised for the distribution of food and relief items to vulnerable persons.

On Wednesday, over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
