Cristiano Ronaldo ventures into film with new studio UR•MARV

Cristiano Ronaldo has embarked on a new journey in the entertainment world, marking his debut in the film industry through a collaboration with British film producer Matthew Vaughn. Together, they have launched an independent film studio, UR•MARV, with plans to produce a series of action-packed films.

This new partnership has already led to the creation and financing of two films, with a third instalment in the pipeline. While the financial details of their 50-50 joint venture have not been made public, the timing of their collaboration is notable, as streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+ continue to invest heavily in independent filmmakers. These platforms offer a global distribution network, enabling the films to reach a broader audience and contribute to the growth of the independent film sector.

Ronaldo expressed his enthusiasm for this new venture in a statement on Thursday: “This is an exciting chapter for me, as I look ahead to new ventures in business.”

Vaughn, known for his innovative approach to action cinema, remarked: “Cristiano has created stories on the pitch that I could never have written, and I look forward to creating inspiring movies with him – he’s a real-life superhero.”

At 40 years old, Ronaldo has steadily expanded his business portfolio over the past decade. His investments now include a stake in a hotel chain, a porcelain manufacturer, and a media company based in Portugal. Additionally, he has recently acquired a tennis and padel club in Lisbon. Ronaldo has also indicated an interest in owning football clubs once he retires, further diversifying his business interests.

Although he continues to excel on the field with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, where he earns a reported US$200 million annually, Ronaldo has not disclosed when he intends to retire from professional football.

Matthew Vaughn, a filmmaker renowned for his fresh take on action cinema, has gained significant recognition for his work. He made his directorial debut with the gritty crime film Layer Cake (2004), and went on to achieve success with bold films such as Kick-Ass (2010) and X-Men: First Class (2011). Vaughn’s biggest breakthrough came in 2014 with the launch of the Kingsman series, a high-energy spy saga that combines stylish visuals with a tongue-in-cheek tone. Most recently, Vaughn directed Argylle (2024), a thrilling espionage adventure featuring Henry Cavill and Bryce Dallas Howard. With two more Kingsman films on the horizon, Vaughn shows no signs of slowing down.
