Covid-19: No side effect reported on AstraZeneca vaccine doses – NPHCDA

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), has disclosed that there is no need to fret as Nigeria did not receive any doses from the batch of vaccines which has reported side effect regarding the ABV5300 AstraZeneca vaccines contrary to news making the round.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Agnecy’s Head of Public Relations, Mohammad Ohitoto on Thursday.
The agency stated that the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine was safe and effective for administering.
The agency expressed that it is satisfied with the clinical evidence indicated in the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to be safe and effective.
Stating that it assessment of the doses is in line with that of developed nations like Spain and the UK.
The statement noted that investigation was ongoing as regards the side effects allegations and the outcome of the investigation will so be revealed.
“We are continuing to monitor the developments regarding ABV5300 batch and will share further information as it becomes available
“We are aware of precautionary concerns that have been raised regarding one specific batch of the AstraZeneca vaccine, namely ABV5300. We understand that investigations are being conducted to determine if the batch is in any way linked to an observed side effect
“While we await the outcome of the investigations, it is important to clearly state that Nigeria did not receive any doses from the batch of vaccines which is at issue”.
The statement disclosed that vaccinations in Nigeria started earlier this month and all side effects reported by those who have been vaccinated has been mild as no adverse reaction has been observed.
The agency further stated that the safety of Nigerians comes first to the presidential task force on covid-19.
“The safety of vaccines delivered to Nigeria is paramount to the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. For this reason, it has enhanced multi-sectorial collaboration among stakeholders and technical entities such as the FMOH, NPHCDA, NAFDAC, WHO and UNICEF whose cooperation ensures the highest global standards are met for vaccines delivered to Nigeria before they are distributed to Nigerians. Clear, rigorous protocols are being followed to safeguard the health of Nigerians”.
The agency encouraged Nigerians who are among those being prioritized in the current phase to continue with the vaccination in confidence and enthusiasm for the vitally important national vaccine program
