An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Monday, remanded one Tejumade Makinde, 37, for allegedly defrauding contributors of a thrift society of N1,913,900.00.
The Prosecutor, Insp Adesina Elijah, told the court that the defendant committed the offences between January 2020 and March 2022 at different locations in Ile-Ife.
Elijah said that the defendant started by allegedly fraudulently collecting the sum of N956,950.00 from different contributors on behalf of Eri Okan ni Koko Daily Contribution Enterprises, Ile-Ife, but failed to remit the amount into the association’s account.
The prosecutor said that the bank account was in the name of one Olusola Lawrence, but the defendant fraudulently converted the said amount to her own use.
He said that the defendant in October 2020 also fraudulently converted N50,000 to her own use, property of Eri Okan Daily Contributory Enterprises.
Elijah further said that the defendant fraudulently converted N31,250 cash, property of Eri Okan ni Koko Daily Contributory Enterprises, to her own use.
The prosecutor stated that the defendant from January to December, 2021, at Eri Okan ni Koko Daily Contributory Enterprises office, Road 7, Ile-Ife, converted cash sum of N131,500 that belonged to Olusola Lawrence to her own benefit.
Elijah said that equally on Dec. 6, 2021, at Eri Okan ni Koko Daily Contributory Enterprises Office, Road 7, Ile-Ife, the defendant fraudulently converted a cash sum of N150,000 to her own use.
He stated further that from January to March 2022 at Eri Okan ni Koko Daily Contributory Enterprises, the defendant fraudulently converted a cash sum of N594, 200 to her own use.
The prosecutor stated that the offences contravened Sections 383, 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.
The defendant, who was not legally represented, however pleaded not guilty to seven-count charge of fraud.
The Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko did not grant the defendant bail, but ordered that she should be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre, pending the consideration of her bail.
The case was adjourned until March 29, for hearing.
