Court remands student over alleged theft

An Upper Area Court Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Thursday ordered that a Student, Hillary Yunana, be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abuja for allegedly stealing items worth N1.57 million.

The defendant, a resident of Bassa Village in Abuja, was remanded after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of house breaking and theft.

The Judge, Mr Sani Umar adjourned the case until April 6 for sentencing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Abudulahi Tanko, told the court that Yunana broke into a shop belonging to Jane Akuma of Bassa Village, Abuja, on February 6.

Tanko said that Yunana allegedly stole handsets, earpiece, ear pods, chargers, and memory cards.

He alleged that he also stole a cash sum of N98,000 from the shop.

Tanko said all the items allegedly stolen by Yunana were valued N1.57 million.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 346 and 287 of the Penal Code
