Court remands man for allegedly stealing cell phone worth N49, 000

A Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Thursday remanded a 36-year-old man, Hitama Ogbenyi, in a correctional centre for allegedly stealing a cell phone worth N49, 000.

The Judge, Isa Anas, ordered that the defendant be remanded until Sept. 13, to determine his bail conditions.

Anas denied the defendant bail because he is facing another similar offence in the same court.

The defendant, who resides at Nyanya, Abuja, is facing a charge of theft, an offence he denied committing.

The Prosecutor, Olarewaju Osho, told the court that the defendant was arrested on Aug. 3.

He said the defendant invited a lady friend, Lucy Etim, and tricked her to a nearby hotel.

Osho added that while the lady excused herself to use the ‘Rest Room’, the defendant stole her Tecno Spark 4 cell phone valued at N49,000 and ran away, until he was traced and arrested.

He said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 287 of the Penal Code.
