Court remands man for allegedly possessing firearm

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 25-year-old man, Benson Friday, in a correctional facility for allegedly being in possession of a firearm.

The police charged the defendant, a resident of Malali in Kaduna State, with illegal possession of firearm.

The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, had told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 15, at about 10:30 p.m. at Malali.

Leo said that a police team, acting on intelligence report, arrested the defendant during a search of his residence and recovered a locally-made pistol from him.

He said that the defendant could not give a satisfactory explanation about how he obtained the weapon.

The prosecutor said that the offence violated the provisions of Section 54 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017

The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that he should be remanded in a correctional centre.

Emmanuel directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for advice.

He adjourned the case until Nov. 29 for mention.
