Court remands man for alleged illicit drug deals

Justice Hadiza Shagari of the Federal High Court, Kaduna on Thursday, ordered that a 30-year-old man, Usman Abdulraman, be remanded in a correctional centre for alleged dealings in illicit drugs.

Shagari adjourned the case until March 15 for review of the facts, after Abdulraman pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa.

Abdulraman was charged before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA Prosecutor, Mr T. J. Atserhegh, alleged that Abdulraman was arrested on Jan. 30, at Malali area of Kaduna with 9kg of cannabis sativa.

The Atserhegh also alleged that Adulraman was caught with the substances in his car during a stop and search and could not give satisfactory explanation of what he was doing with it.

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (b) of the NDLEA Act.

The prosecution told the court that he relied on the plea taken by the defendant and applied for a date for review of the facts.

He said that the forensic result of the drug was not ready and requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional centre, pending the outcome of the result.
