Court remands man, 21, over alleged rape

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand of a 21-year-old man, Adebisi Femi, at the Correctional Centre in Ado-Ekiti over alleged rape.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is being tried for alleged rape.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 4 in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant raped a 23-year-old girl.

Adeniyi told the court that the defendant and the victim were both students.

He said that the victim was also into selling of cosmetics.

“The defendant told the victim that he needed some goods and she should bring them   to his house, but when she got to his house, he locked the door and raped her,” he said.

According to him, the offence contravened Section 2(2) of Ekiti State Gender Based Violence (Prohibition) Amended Law, 2019.

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant in the correctional centre pending when it would receive legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

The plea of the defendant was not taken.

The Magistrate, Mrs  Dolapo Kay-Williams,  ordered the remand of the defendant at the correctional centre, pending  the issuance of legal advice by the office of  the DPPs.

She adjourned the case until Oct.25 for mention.
