Court remands cobbler over unlawful possession of gun, robbery

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that a 25-year- old cobbler, Mufutau Azeez, be remanded over alleged unlawful possession of gun and robbery.

The police charged Azeez, a resident of Oremeji, Command, Lagos State, with conspiracy, unlawful possession of gun and robbery.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A Odubajo, who did not take the defendant’s plea, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

Odubajo, however, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

She adjourned the case until March 1, for DPP’s advice.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Olasunkanmi Adejumola, told the court that the defendant and others still at large committed the offences on December 2, 2021 at Olamideko Street, Dopemu, Lagos State.

He said that the defendant, who was armed with offensive weapons, vandalised the vehicles of Mr Monday Orisade and Kazeem Okanlawon and robbed them of N130, 000.

“He robbed Orisade of some vehicle parts valued at N80,000 and robbed Okanlawon of vehicle parts worth N50,000.

“The defendant was arrested by a vigilante group while others escaped with the stolen vehicle parts.

“When the defendant was searched, a gun was recovered,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offences violated Sections 296 and 298(3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
