Court remands 3 unemployed men for alleged culpable homicide

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makrurdi on Thursday ordered that three unemployed men be remanded in a correction centre for alleged culpable homicide.

The police charged Sonter Ornguga, Aongoungwa Ushahemba and Kwaghgbe Lumunter with two counts of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

Magistrate Christy Ikpe, who did take the pleas of the suspects, ordered that they should be remanded in the Federal Maximum Correctional Centre Makurdi.

She adjourned the case until Jan. 30  for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp James Ewaoche said the case was transferred from the Ukum Divisional Police Station to State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi through a letter No. AR: 3100/BNS/UK/VOL.3/144 dated 19th November.

Ewaoche said that ASP Peter Odukpahe, a patrol officer  attached to  the Ukum Division who was posted on foot patrol with other security agencies on township patrol was killed by gunmen.

He said during police investigation, Ornguga, Ushahemba and Lumunter were arrested for the crime while the gang leader Myuega Kwaghgbe, Aka ”Yuga” and others are at large.

He said the offence  contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 222 of the penal code law of Benue State 2004.

He said investigation into the matter was still ongoing.
