Corruption is eroding public trust, stifling economic growth – ICPC Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu has disclosed that corruption is crippling national development and eroding public trust.
The Chairman made the disclosure during ICPC Conference with state Attorney Generals on strengthening capacity for corruption prevention in Abuja on Monday.
He said ” We must recognise that corruption is not merely a legal issue but a common enemy hindering national development. It is a cancer that erodes public trust, stifles economic growth, and perpetuates inequality.
“As part of our implementation strategy, we have invited you here today to examine our current justice system and develop effective strategies to enhance the ICPC’s capacity for preventive measures. I hope to also enhance synergy between State Attorneys General and State anti-corruption agencies now established nationwide with the ICPC to provide a suitable platform for an effective fight against corruption and a viable solution to Nigeria’s current socio-political problems.”
“As Chief Law Officers of your respective states, you occupy strategic positions. As members of the body of benchers, the highest distinction body in our profession, your role in promoting justice, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law is paramount. I do not doubt that you embody these ideals, and your attendance at this conference signifies your commitment to pursuing a corruption-free Nigeria.
Speaking about performance, the ICPC Chairman said “Since assuming office in December 2023, I have prioritised coordination and collaboration in our anti-corruption efforts. This approach is reflected in the new ICPC Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for 2024-2028, which emphasises the importance of working together to achieve our shared goals – as is the theme of this conference. I have also invested in improving our digital capabilities as an anti-corruption commission focused on prevention and have addressed pressing issues such as sexual harassment in tertiary institutions where we brought the state education Commissioners and ministers of education and women affairs to address sexual harassment in our tertiary institutions as a result of abuse of office.
According to him the keynote speaker, Chief Kanu G. Agabi, SAN, a distinguished lawyer and former Attorney General of the Federation who has significantly contributed to the fight against corruption throughout his illustrious career. His insights and those of our esteemed panellists will undoubtedly provide invaluable guidance as we chart a unified strategy against corruption.
He said “as we embark on this important conference, please actively engage with our keynote speaker and distinguished panellists. Let us seize this opportunity to develop effective strategies and share knowledge, and solidify our unwavering commitment to justice and accountability.”
The President of Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe called for political will in strengthening the rule of laws in the country.
He appealed to the attorney generals in various states to play their part in ensuring that the rule of law is observed by political actors.
The Representative of the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi Urges level of collaboration among lawyers to protect the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria.
He stressed that synergy is key as no single entity can tackle corruption alone but stakeholders including both public and private leaders to live by example.
He commended the ICPC team for ensuring transparency in the fight against corruption in the country in years..
The AG encouraged collaboratoon in the whistleblowing scheme by supporting citizens who stand to fight against corruption .
The keynote speaker, Chief Kanu Agabi tasked the always seek God first in their professional activities to act in the interest of populace benefit.
He called all anti corruption agencies to campaign for Nigerians in diaspora to bring back their monies into the country for investment to ensure viable economy.
The Attorney General of Taraba state, Yakubu Maikasuwa SAN, opined that the conference is timely to share ideas and interact with one another thereby improving on legal blueprint of the country.
