Commissioner tasks NYCN officials on exemplary leadership
The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Lucky Yargwa, has urged officials of the state chapter of National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), to always exhibit exemplary leadership worthy of emulation.
He gave the charge in Lafia on Wednesday at the inauguration of a committee by the state leadership of NYCN, to conduct elections in the local chapters.
Yargwa represented by the acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abubakar Umar, said that given the role NYCN plays as the umbrella body of youth council, they were critical in moulding the character of youths through their own conduct.
He added that with exhibition of exemplary leadership, NYCN would be contributing immensely to the proper orientation of youths by imbibing in them good characters that would make them quality leaders in future.
“We all know that NYCN is the apex body of all youth organisations in the state. From what I have seen, there will be a positive change.
“As for the electoral body, I urge you not to hesitate to ensure you bring candidates who have no skeletons in their cupboards.
“So that by the time you start your full movement, no issues of litigation and accusation that will set you back,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr Shuaibu Sani, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Youth Affairs, advised members of the youth body to reciprocate government’s support by always engaging themselves in exemplary conducts.
“In doing that, there will be less restiveness and the election that you have just inaugurated a committee for, will be rancour free.
“The state government is counting on you to always lead by example in everything you do,” he said.
Earlier, Jaafar Loko, NYCN state chairman said the state executive was empowered by the council’s constitution to device a democratic platform for election of local chapter officials for a four year tenure, hence the inauguration of the electoral committee.
“The state working committee evokes the provision of Section 12(3) of the Council’s Constitution to constitute 9-man electoral committee with representatives from each zone and one from the ministry of Youth and Sports Development to conduct elections in all the 13 local governments and development areas in the state,” he said.
Loko said that the nine-member electoral committee would be chaired by Mohammed Nata’ala, with Akolo Alaku, as secretary.
He said the committee would be saddled with the responsibility of preparing and conducting free and fair elections as well as production and publication of electoral guidelines and election time table in line with the council’s constitution.
