The Coalition of Patriotic Democrats (CPD) has inaugurated her National Executive Council to pilot the affairs of the organization in strengthening dividends of democracy in the country.
Speaking during the inauguration of its new executive yesterday in Abuja, the CPD National Coordinator and Chairman Board of Trustees, High Chief Ako Atuloma called on politicians to focused on developmental criticism that will assist the leaders in power towards achieving greater heights.
He said ” the opposition should focus on patriotic contributions to help governments fulfill their mandates and deliver on campaign promises not about attacking the government at every turn.
“It should be about offering meaningful, patriotic suggestions, constructive engagement strengthens democracy and ensures the well-being of the nation, while antagonism only creates division and hinders progress.”
The Coordinator criticized the growing trend of post-election disputes and resistance to government initiatives, describing such actions as detrimental to national development.
He underscored the importance of accepting election outcomes and collaborating for the greater good, noting that such practices foster trust and open channels for dialogue between political actors.
“Once elections and litigations are concluded, it is time to bury the hatchet and focus on governance. Opposition leaders have a responsibility to the people to ensure that their contributions are solution-oriented and not driven by personal or partisan vendettas,” he added.
Atuloma highlighted the example of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who maintained a constructive relationship with his successor despite losing the 2015 elections. According to the Coalition, this stands as a model of patriotic democracy.
The group also acknowledged Nigerians’ concerns about pressing issues such as high living costs, insecurity, and unmet promises but urged citizens and opposition leaders to channel their grievances constructively.
“Opposition leaders must leverage their access to power to provide solutions. Hostility only breeds mistrust and reduces the likelihood of their proposals being implemented,” he noted.
While reassuring their commitment to promoting unity, patriotism, and responsible opposition in Nigeria’s democracy, Atuloma called on all stakeholders to prioritize the nation’s progress over personal or political interests.
The Keynote speaker, Mr. Chris Agiri Founder and Director General Flag Foundation of Nigeria said “the beginning and end of democracy lies on the election of the right quality of leadership.
” any society where the citizens are not active, politically aware, not making sacrifices that society can’t experience sustainable development in the country.
He appealed to the participants as registered association to embrace total commitment in contributing their quota towards societal transformation because every reform is somebody idea.
Former Senator representing Taraba Central at the National Assembly Abubakar Yusuf who was a guest speaker emphasized that one can help individuals grow, learn, and improve, ultimately leading to better performance and outcomes in the country.
The highlights of the inauguration was the swearing of the national executives to adhere to their laid down rules and regulations.
