In anticipation of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria’s Annual Directors Conference, scheduled for October 30-31, 2024, at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, we spoke with DG/CEO of the CIoD Nigeria, Mr. Bamidele Alimi, FNIM, FCIoD and Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mrs. Fatumata Coker, MCIoD. This year’s conference theme, “Good Governance as a Catalyst for Economic Recovery, Growth, and Development,” promises an in-depth look at how governance can drive Nigeria’s economic future.
The conference theme this year focuses on “Good Governance as a Catalyst for Economic Recovery, Growth, and Development.” What unique insights or perspectives do you plan to share with attendees?
Bamidele Alimi: This theme is especially relevant given Nigeria’s current economic landscape. Effective governance is fundamental to building a stable economy that supports innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation. At this conference, we’ll highlight how strong institutions, transparent regulatory frameworks, and a culture of accountability are essential for sustainable growth.
We’ll discuss successful models, like Singapore’s governance framework, to illustrate how institutional reforms and anti-corruption efforts drive economic success. Additionally, we’ll explore the role of public-private partnerships and how technology can foster transparency, ultimately building public trust in governance.
You mentioned global best practices. Mrs. Coker, how do you think those lessons can be tailored to Nigeria’s unique governance and economic landscape?
Fatumata Coker: Absolutely. Each country has unique challenges, but principles such as transparency, accountability, and inclusivity are universal. We’re looking closely at how these global models can be adapted to Nigeria. For example, establishing robust anti-corruption frameworks here means not only legal reforms but also creating community awareness and engagement. We’re also emphasising the power of public-private partnerships to address critical sectors like infrastructure and healthcare, where collaboration can be transformative.
What are some of the main takeaways directors and business leaders can expect from the conference?
Bamidele Alimi: Directors and business leaders can look forward to actionable strategies for embedding good governance in their organisations. We’ll address institutional reforms, anti-corruption measures, and the role of public-private partnerships in promoting growth. Inclusive governance is a focal point, as it ensures that economic opportunities extend to marginalised groups and promotes social equity.
Beyond the insights, there will be ample networking opportunities. Engaging with policymakers, experts, and peers will enable business leaders to stay informed on regulatory developments and discover new growth avenues. These connections are vital for fostering collaboration and driving innovation in governance.
How do you see this conference impacting the future of governance in Nigeria?
Fatumata Coker: Our hope is that the discussions here will serve as a foundation for meaningful policy reforms. By sharing successful case studies and practical strategies, we aim to inspire the private sector to invest more in governance initiatives. Prioritising transparency, accountability, and inclusivity will be instrumental in shaping sustainable economic policies.
We envision attendees taking these lessons back to their organisations and communities, creating a ripple effect that promotes positive change. This conference has the potential to be a catalyst for elevating governance standards in Nigeria, pushing us toward a future where governance is characterised by equity, accountability, and integrity.
Lastly, what do you believe will be the most transformative aspect of this conference?
Bamidele Alimi: I believe the focus on inclusive governance is transformative. By prioritising social equity and extending economic opportunities to underserved communities, we’re moving beyond economic growth in a vacuum. Governance, when inclusive, enhances both economic prosperity and social harmony, building a foundation for sustainable development. We hope that leaders attending will be inspired to implement these ideas, championing change in their own capacities for a stronger, more resilient Nigeria.
