Church of Nigeria condemns England’s approval of same-sex marriage liturgy

The Church of Nigeria has condemned the General Synod of the Church of England’s recent approval of the “Living in Love and Faith Liturgy,” which permits blessings for same-sex couples and allows clergy to marry same-sex partners. This decision, made on 8 July 2024 in York, is viewed by the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion as a departure from Biblical teachings.

The votes was narrowly in favor: Bishops—22 for, 12 against; Clergy—99 for, 88 against; Laity—95 for, 91 against. The Church of Nigeria expressed deep concern, stating that the Church of England has moved away from Biblical truths on marriage as outlined in Genesis 2:18-24 and Matthew 19:4-6.

Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Henry Ndukuba, criticized the Church of England’s bishops for prioritizing modern cultural trends over Scriptural authority, warning that this could lead to a “Broken Sacramental Communion” with other Anglican provinces that adhere to traditional Biblical teachings. He compared the situation to the 2003 controversy over the Episcopal Church (USA) and the consecration of Canon Gene Robinson, which also threatened Anglican unity.

The Church of Nigeria reaffirmed its support for the Church of England Evangelical Council (CEEC), GAFCON, and other Anglicans worldwide who oppose the decision, calling it a “grave error” and a violation of Biblical teachings on marriage. Ndukuba praised those who opposed the change and assured support for faithful members within the Church of England who uphold Scriptural authority, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith.
