Christmas greetings: APC, PDP charge Nigerians to show love, keep hope alive

The ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) and major opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have charged Nigerinas to use the Yuletide season to show love to and keep the hope alive.

These messages came in a separate Christmas greetings to Nigerians by the two major parties in Nigeria.

While the ruling party urged the fateful to use the season to give and show love to one another, particularly the needy and vulnerable, the opposition party charged Nigerians to keep the hope alive despite all the challenges facing the country.

The National Secretary, APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Sen. John Akpanudoedehe said made this known in a statement yesterday while felicitating Christian fatefuls.

According to him, “the APC joins Christians and indeed all Nigerians in marking the joyful occasion of Christmas which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.

“In true essence of Christmas, the party urges all to use the joyful season to give and show love to our fellow men, particularly the needy and vulnerable among us.

“The party urges prayers and support for our selfless security and other essential services massively deployed around the country to ensure safe travel and yuletide festivities,” he said.

Akpankudohede assured Nigerians of President Muhammadu Buhari government’s capacity, intent and urgency to check and contain all criminalities so that Nigerians could go about their legitimate activities across the country safely.

He further urged Nigerians to be mindful of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the recent wave of the Omicron variant as they visit and celebrate with family, friends and loved ones.

The APC scribe advised Nigerians to take the widely available COVID-19 vaccines and adhere to public health protocols in order to halt the spread of the virus.

He, however, noted that the polity was rife with different views on the 2021 Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

“We remain solidly committed and support constitutionally permitted and practical innovations and processes that will improve the transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s electioneering processes and internal democracy,” he said.

Akpankudohede said this was specifically as it concerns the nomination of political party candidates.

He noted that on the economic front, the recently launched National Development Plan (NDP) for 2021 to 2025 would further spur Nigeria to achieve robust development through the use of science, technology and innovation to drive growth.

According to him, the plan will consolidate on the implementation of ongoing major infrastructure and other development projects across the country and open up economic opportunities for Nigerians.

He wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and urged citizens to pray for a prosperous 2022 New Year.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of PDP, Dr Iyorchia Ayu National said in a statement in Abuja that Nigerians should endear to imbibe the virtues of Christ such as godliness, love, humility, kindness and selflessness.

He appealed to Nigerians to use the Christmas season to reflect on the state of the nation, and to decide on deliberate actions in the New Year.

“Prayers are good, but 2022 must be our year of democratic action, the ultimate year being 2023,” he said.
