China reiterates its commitment to Africa in anticipation of the FOCAC summit
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to collaborating closely with African nations to ensure the success of the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit. He emphasized China’s readiness to host the event, which is set to take place in Beijing from September 4 to September 5.
Wang stressed that the summit’s success would significantly advance Africa’s development and rejuvenation. He noted that China aims to strengthen political trust with African countries to elevate their cooperative efforts. Additionally, China is prepared to work alongside South Africa to enhance strategic dialogue, deepen mutual trust, and boost bilateral cooperation.
Wang highlighted the close ties between China and South Africa, as well as other African nations, noting their shared status as major developing countries and members of the Global South. He underscored their mutual support and partnership in upholding international justice.
In response, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola praised the robust political trust and rapid growth in economic and trade relations between the two countries, noting that China has become South Africa’s largest trading partner. He reaffirmed South Africa’s respect for the one-China policy and its support for China’s positions on Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and Tibet.
