CESEL powers up Osi community with solar-powered oil palm mill, borehole
Community Energy Social Enterprise Limited (CESEL), a leading provider of sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa, has recently commissioned a solar-powered oil palm mill and a solar-powered borehole in Osi Community, Osun State. This initiative comes shortly after the deployment of a 45KW Solar Hybrid Mini Grid to the community.
Nigeria, despite its vast oil reserves, has struggled with poor power supply for decades. Over 90 million Nigerians lack access to grid electricity, with rural communities being the most affected. This lack of access stifles economic development and hinders the well-being of millions, a challenge that is estimated to cost businesses about $29 billion yearly, according to the World Bank.
The newly commissioned solar-powered oil mill marks a significant upgrade for Osi’s palm oil production, replacing traditional methods with advanced technology powered by the CESEL-Concerto JV mini-grid. This upgrade is expected to boost palm oil production in the community to an impressive 30,000 liters per day, a significant increase from the previous maximum of about 1,000 liters.
In addition to the oil palm mill, CESEL also commissioned a solar-powered borehole, addressing the community’s long-standing water scarcity issues.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, CESEL CEO Dr. Patrick Tolani pledged to further support the community by facilitating the registration of the mill under the National Agency For Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, ensuring the highest quality standards for their palm oil production.
“This initiative aims to attract the right off-takers and further contribute to the community’s economic development,” he said.
The commissioning ceremony was met with gratitude from the Osi community. Oba Solomon Ademakinwa, the paramount ruler, emphasised the transformative potential of the project, stating that it would attract investors and lead to significant economic development.
The Oil Palm Millers Association also expressed their appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its positive impact on their livelihoods and the local economy.
