Canadian police have arrested Amaka Sunnberger for threatening to poison Yoruba and Benin people in a viral video

Amaka Patience Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman residing in Canada, has been arrested by Toronto police for threatening to poison Yoruba and Benin people in a viral video. The Toronto Police Service issued a statement revealing that Sunnberger, 46, was apprehended on September 1, 2024, and charged with uttering threats. She is scheduled to appear in court on September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107 at the Ontario Court of Justice.

The police statement indicated that the threats, made around August 25, 2024, were considered hate-motivated. The investigation is being handled by the Hate Crime Unit (HCU), and the case is being treated as a suspected hate crime. The statement also noted that anyone with information should contact the police or Crime Stoppers.

The video, which has sparked significant concern, shows Sunnberger threatening to poison the food and water of Yoruba and Benin individuals. In her remarks, Sunnberger explicitly stated her intention to use harmful substances, including rat poison, to cause illness or death. This has prompted the Nigerian Diaspora Commission to petition Canadian authorities, urging them to take action.

The situation has drawn attention from various quarters, including the House of Representatives, which has called on the Canadian government to prosecute Sunnberger for her threats against the Yoruba and Benin communities.
