CAN condemns murder of Catholic Priest in Kaduna

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has expressed profound grief over the abduction and brutal killing of Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, a priest of St. Mary Catholic Church, Tachira, in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Fr. Okechukwu was taken from his residence on 4 March 2025 and tragically murdered the following day by unidentified assailants.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its chairman, Rev. Dr. Joseph John Hayab, Northern CAN condemned the killing, describing it as a devastating loss for both the Church and society. The association also decried the worsening security situation in the region.

“This appalling crime further highlights the alarming insecurity in Northern Nigeria, where innocent citizens, including clergy members, are frequently targeted, abducted, and killed without consequence,” the statement read.

CAN urged the Kaduna State Government, the Federal Government, and security agencies to take decisive action against the escalating wave of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, stressing that the ongoing bloodshed must not continue unchecked.

While acknowledging the efforts of security operatives in combating criminal activities, the Christian body called for intensified operations to bring about a decisive and lasting victory against insurgency.

The association also appealed to local communities to remain vigilant and actively cooperate with security forces by promptly reporting suspicious activities, reiterating that maintaining security is a collective responsibility.

As the Christian community mourns, Northern CAN encouraged believers to stand firm in their faith and resist any temptation to retaliate. “Though we grieve, we must not succumb to the urge for vengeance. Instead, we must uphold the teachings of Christ by responding with love, prayer, and unwavering trust in God’s justice,” Rev. Hayab urged.

Northern CAN extended its condolences to the Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, the Diocese of Kafanchan, Fr. Okechukwu’s family, and the entire Christian community.

The association also called upon Nigerians to join in prayers for the repose of the slain priest’s soul and for divine comfort for all those affected by his tragic death.
