CAC, British High Commission partner to deepen public sector reforms

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the British High Commission (BHC) are set to deepen collaboration and enhance implementation of beneficial ownership principles, among others.

This indication was given at a meeting between the British High Commission and the CAC today in Abuja.

A two-man delegation led by Chris Okeke (Senior Governance Advisor) accompanied by Jehanzeb Khan (Illicit Finance Adviser) highlighted BHC’s activities and collaboration with several government agencies in the areas of anti-corruption, money laundering, illicit financing, transparency, and accountability in public office.

The team acknowledged Nigeria’s success in the implementation of the Beneficial Ownership Register, being the first African country to establish a BOR that is adjudged to be one of the best in the world.

Sequel to the recent reckoning of Nigeria’s success on the BOR implementation during a conference in the Seychelles, the British High Commission stressed the need to amplify the gains and improve work relations with civil society organisations.

Partnership with the UK Companies House is an area that would be explored to share experiences and improve technical capacity, the team stressed.

They expressed confidence that other countries have a lot to learn from Nigeria’s success in the BOR implementation and applauded the Registrar-General’s commitment towards enhancing transparency and accountability in government business.

Responding, the Registrar-General/CEO of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN, highlighted the Commission’s challenges with converting legacy records, some of which date back to 1912, into electronic formats.

He therefore sought the High Commission’s support in that direction as well as technical capacity building for staff leveraging the expertise and experience of the UK Companies House.

The Registrar-General later took the visitors on a guided tour of the Commission’s Record Management Department, which is the repository of the Commission’s documents and legacy files.

He was accompanied by Justine Nidiya Biraol (Director Compliance), Mrs. Tume Terumbur Scholastica (Director NSOD), Obeta Ambrose Chinweike (Director ICT), Dominic O. Inyang (HPA), Mamman Gbale Mamman (HRMD), Terver Ayua-Jor (SA to RG), Rasheed Mahe (Supervisor Media Section), and Sani Idris Lere (Protocol Officer to RG), among others.
