Cab driver docked over alleged robbery, sexual assault on passengers

The police on Friday arraigned a 32-year-old cab driver, Chinedu Odinchefu in a Plateau State High Court over alleged robbery and sexual assault on passengers.

The prosecutor, W.T Awe, told the court that sometime in May, Odinchefu picked seven passengers to convey them to their destinations but robbed them thereafter.

According to him, the accused used a toy gun to scare the ladies before dispossessing them of their belongings.

He added that “on several dates in May, Odinchefu armed himself with a toy gun and picked seven women from Steffans Hotel, Rayfield and Old Airport Road, posing as cab driver.

“He drove to a secluded area where he scared the passengers with a gun and dispossess them of their cell phones valued at N385,000 and N45,000 cash.”

The prosecutor alleged that Odinchefu also engaged in indecent sexual acts with the passengers.

Awe added that the offences contravened sections 259 and 242 of the Plateau State Penal Code, punishable with up to 14 years imprisonment if found guilty.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty.

The Judge, Justice J. Bakfur, after taking his plea, ordered that he should be remanded at the Jos Custodial Centre until Oct. 18 for hearing.
