Businessman docked for allegedly defrauding friend

The police on Friday arraign a 35-year-old businessman, Obasi Okonkwo in a Grade I Area Court, Zuba for allegedly defrauding his friend of N400, 000.

The police charged Okonkwo, who resides at No 4 Shago-tara, Kano State   with criminal breach of trust and cheating

The Prosecution Counsel, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that complainant David Onyema, reported the matter at the Byazhin Police Station, Abuja, on Aug. 17

Ogada told the court that on Nov. 27, 2020 the defendant lied that he was detained at the police station in Abuja and needed money for bail.

He said that the complainant sent money to N400, 000 to the defendant on the agreement that he will pay back the money but he failed to do so.

The prosecution said that all efforts to recover the money from the defendant failed.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the penal code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge Umar A Angulu admitted Okonkwo to bail in the sum of N 250, 000 and a surety in like sum.

He ordered that the surety must reside within the court jurisdiction.

Angulu adjourned the case until Sept. 15 for hearing.
