BSUTH to set up ultra-modern cancer unit, targets early detection, treatment

The Chief Medical Director (CMD), Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, Dr Stephen Hwande, has revealed that the hospital under his watch has put in place all necessary arrangements to set up an ultra modern cancer unit.

Dr Hwande made the disclosure on Wednesday in Makurdi while briefing press preparatory to the BSUTH International Health Investment Summit/Scientific Exhibition and Endowment Fund for Cancer to start on Thursday and end on Friday.

The CMD explained that the aim was to enable early detection and treatment of the ailment, stressed that cancer cannot be treated only when it could be detected late, emphasized that if cancer was detected early it can be cured.

“Women that have multiple sex partners and give birth up-to four children do experience virgina discharge issues and it sometimes leads to cervical cancer.

“The management of this hospital wants to change the narrative of cancer management in the State,” Hwande maintained.

The CMD further explained that the hospital would launch a Five billion naira cancer endowment fund on Friday.

He also revealed that BSUTH would soon establish a Very Important Persons (VIPs) Clinic and all the testing gadgets would be there to mimick what was happening abroad.

Hwande further disclosed that the hospital would also recognized some of her benefactors particularly the former governor of the state Sen. Gabriel Suswam for his generous support to the hospital.

He also said that he owed the Governor of the State Rev. Fr Dr. Hyacinth Alia a debt of gratitude for his selfless support to the hospital and the State at large, stressed that the growth and development of the hospital in recent times was as a result of his relentless support.

The CMD also revealed some of the modest achievements recorded by the hospital under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia to include; recruitment of not less than 600 staff cut across all cadre to beef up manpower to what has been in existence, restored not less than 12 Medical Professors to offer quality and professional medical services to patients.

He said the hospital under his watch has restored hygiene and sanity within the hospital premises, set up second dialysis unit at the isolation center among other transformations.
