Brake failure: Truck driver dies in tragic Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident

A tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has left a truck driver feared dead following a series of collisions near the Kara Bridge, causing a major traffic jam on the busy route.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, began when the driver of an articulated truck, attempting to avoid a 40-foot container, lost control and crashed. The truck, loaded with coils of steel, toppled onto its side, spilling its cargo across the carriageway.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the truck and container blocking all lanes, paralysing traffic in both directions.

Upon arrival, LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team discovered that the truck, laden with several rolls of steel coils, had fallen on its side after attempting to avoid colliding with the 40-foot container. LASEMA’s investigation revealed that the driver, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, lost his life in the crash. His body had already been removed by authorities before LASEMA’s team arrived. The response team swiftly worked to secure the site and clear the wreckage to allow traffic to resume.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “The articulated truck driver, in an attempt to avoid colliding with the 40-foot container, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall and spill its cargo across the road.”

LASEMA’s efforts led to the clearing of the debris, and normal traffic flow resumed later in the day.
