Boko Haram ravage Omowunmi family, rape mother
On July 14, 2023, Omowunmi Akpotare Abisoye and her family were forced to flee their home in Sabo Gerri, Katsina State, after four armed men stormed their community and began shooting.
According to Omowunmi, “on hearing the gunshot we took to our heels and escaped through the bush around our house to the nearest police station where we lodged our complaints. The police gave us protection that night and advised us to leave the community since that would be the fourth time in three months. Without any hesitation, we have no choice but to leave for the safety of our lives.
“I, Omowunmi Akpotare Abisoye, and my family, namely Omowunmi Adebusoye Emmanuel, Omowunmi Boluwatife Victoria and Omowunmi Oluwadarasimi Enoch, left for Suleja, the outskirts of Abuja, to start a life in a one-bedroom apartment to gather things together since we left without anything. Suleja was fun, and the kids liked it before this incident of rape happened to me in front of my husband and the kids.
“On the 3rd of January, 2024, at around 23hrs, some men numbering three came to our house to rob us of our valuables; on getting there, they discovered we didn’t have anything at home, and the three of them raped me in front of my family.
“As if that wasn’t enough, on the 22nd of May, 2024,I was raped again in front of my kids while my husband went to work. This incident was reported to the appropriate authorities, who promised to get to the root of it, but all their efforts proved abortive.
“Based on this, I was humiliated and couldn’t stand it any longer, and I moved to Abeokuta in Southwestern Nigeria.”
Adding to this, she noted, “On the 8th of August 2024 in Abeokuta at around 9:00 pm, my husband and my daughter were coming from a friend’s house and got kidnapped on their way home. The kidnappers demanded N30 million as a ransom before they could release my husband and my daughter, with a threat that if the money did not get to them in two days that they were going to kill them, and come for us too.
“At this point I have no choice than to run for my dear life with my son. Before leaving, this case was reported at Obantoko police station and we got a police report and affidavit before a good samaritan took me and my son out of the country; the whereabouts of my husband and my daughter are still unknown to me.”
