Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has vowed to unlock the state’s vast tourism potential as a catalyst for economic prosperity, emphasizing the need to leverage its waterways for sustainable development.
The Governor made the pledge on Saturday at the highly anticipated Lagos Boat Regatta 2024, a groundbreaking event held across the state under the theme, “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life.”
The event, which saw festivities spread across the five divisions of Lagos, was designed to highlight the beauty and potential of the state’s waterways. Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his opening remarks, stressed the importance of using these waterways not only as transportation routes but also as a robust ecosystem for tourism.
“My administration is committed to exploring our waterways to create a strong tourism ecosystem and expand the state’s transportation infrastructure. This Boat Regatta is a testament to our vision of reviving Lagos’ rich cultural heritage while simultaneously boosting our economy,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Speaking about the significance of the regatta, the Governor noted that it represented the beginning of many festive events aimed at showcasing the beauty of Lagos during the yuletide season.
“One-third of Lagos is surrounded by water, so it is crucial that we use our waterways as more than just transport routes. This event is just the start of what will be an exciting journey toward enhancing Lagos’ tourism profile,” he added.
The regatta featured an impressive display of water infrastructure and boat races across Lagos’ five divisions, offering both residents and visitors an unforgettable experience.
The Governor later joined some members of his executive council for a boat ride, urging Lagosians to take full advantage of the city’s waterway offerings as a means of relaxation and recreation.
In a related statement, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, highlighted the event’s potential to drive economic growth and create opportunities for local businesses.
“The Lagos Boat Regatta 2024 is more than just an event; it’s a platform to immerse participants in the rich cultural heritage of our waterways while promoting sustainable tourism practices. This event further solidifies Lagos’ status as a premier global destination,” she said.
The regatta showcased parades, dance performances, and innovative displays, capturing the vibrant heritage of Lagos.
Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka noted that such events serve to not only boost tourism but also enhance the state’s reputation as an emerging hub for international tourists.
