Benue Assembly approves three year tenure for LG chairmen

The Benue State House of Assembly has approved a three year tenure for local government council chairmen and councillors in the State.

The House took the decision during Friday , 4th October, plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh.

This followed the amendment of the 2007 local government law and for purposes connected there with.

The Local Government Principal Law, 2007 as amended is hereby further amended as follows.

By the addition of the words ” except the person resigns his membership of the council at least thirty days to the elections” at the end of the section 21 (4)

By the deletion of the words “two years ” appearing immediately after the words ” expiration of the period of’ in Section 13 (2) and 27 (3) respectively and the substitution therefore of the words “Three Years”

By the deletion of the words ; “two years” appearing immediately after the words expiration of the period of in Section 22 (2) and the substitution therefor of the words “Three Years”

By the deletion of the words two years appearing immediately after the words expiration of the period of in Section 43 (1) of the principal law and the substitution therefor of the words” Three Years”

The Assembly also confirmed the appointment of Mr. Halem Ikyo of Zone B and Mr. David Ochapa of Zone C as Deputy Clerks of the House.
