BBL doctor wanted as client dies during surgery

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a manhunt for Dr. Idara Bassey in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman named Abiola. Abiola reportedly died during a buttocks enlargement procedure at a clinic located in Lekki Phase 1.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed the development on Thursday. According to reports Abiola visited the clinic for a Brazilian Butt Lift, a cosmetic surgery involving the transfer of fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks. The procedure, however, took a tragic turn after a nurse, who acted on Bassey’s instructions, administered an injection.

Despite warnings from medical experts about potential risks, the Brazilian Butt Lift remains popular, with many women in Lagos sharing their experiences online. Abiola had traveled from her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Ibeju Lekki, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure on Monday.

Following the nurse’s administration of the injection, Abiola reportedly lost consciousness and began struggling to breathe. The driver, who had brought her to the clinic, subsequently alerted the police.

The police have arrested the nurse involved in the incident, but Hundeyin reported that Dr. Bassey, the clinic’s owner, is currently evading capture. Hundeyin confirmed that Dr. Bassey is considered a suspect in the case and remains at large.

A similar case involving a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, who died in 2019 during a similar procedure at Medicana Kadikoy Hospital in Istanbul. The BBC reported that Kerr had not been adequately informed about the risks of the surgery prior to her operation.
